Appraisal & revalidation
Clinicians are facing calls from a number of directions to demonstrate the quality of the care they deliver, not just as part of the organisation they work in, but as individual practitioners.
- Appraisal and revalidation have set individual practice audit at the forefront of professional accountability.
- The next phase of the Darzi reforms, which emphasises clinical leadership and service line management, is making evidence-based peer review and clinical reporting essential for operational management
- Central Policy, with the current consultation Measuring for quality improvement sets out a clear strategic agenda requiring the NHS at every level, right down to frontline clinical teams, to have effective ways of measuring quality.
C-CI has now launched its new module for individual consultants to compile and audit their own practice data. See below.

Using state-of-the-art encryption and N3 certified remote hosting, CRAB for Consultants enables consultant surgeons to capture and analyse clinical practice data, using POSSUM - a professional best practice methodology for case-mix adjustment and outcomes scoring.
As a web-based system, individuals can log-in from anywhere with guaranteed security to access their professional practice accounts. This enables consultants to manage their practice at times and in locations to suit them. Equally, clinicians may choose to input all patients, or simply a valid sample, depending on personal objectives. For tax efficiency, consultants may also consider logging private practice data on the system.
Data entry is intuitive, and driven by simple menus. Users of the system have reported being able to register complete patient score data in less than 5 minutes.
The system generates automatic monthly feedback on consultants’ outcomes, and comprehensive annual reports for the purposes of appraisal and revalidation portfolios.
